Should we create a database of everyone's DNA that can be used by police authorities in order to apprehend criminals?

hello
I think it is a good idea, it would reduce crime levels and make things easier for police. Some people might think it is an invasion of privacy but it only would be used if you did something wrong. It also might be used to prove your innocents.
Do criminals have the right to
commit crimes undetecded ?
Certainly would cut down the leg work it requires to obtain DNA samples and would help Police to solve crimes.
Have you thought about the possible abuse this system may have? What if someone were to 'hack' into the DNA database and 'steal' the information? What could be the potential ramifications of this? How can anybody be truly protected if the security system could be breached? What would that mean to innocent people?
Would like to know your thoughts ...
Hi my dads a Cop and Haveing a Data base whould be very usefull. with the it could be hacked yes it could but they could give it surcurity like the FBI type sucurity but with a DNA bank you also have to consider that pplz who have cancer and other things could get around this kinda with the oporations they have but im not sure if thats true or not.
ok this is very challenging oh my brains hurting but im going to give it a try. Yes it woul dbe very useful for POLICE to have this so called 'DNA DATABASE' and it woul dmake life so much easier for them to.Yes people could hack into this but doesn't that only happen if the security is not protected properly. Example if we had this so called 'database' and we changed the password ...evryday..no EVERYWEEK and there should be like a limit of 3 tries then the police get contacted immedialtly then we would have no problems.
No. It would be a waste of time and money. Getting everyone's DNA would be next to impossible, particularly in places like China, where the birth rate would be too high for people to collect DNA from every person.
If the authorities wanted to find a criminal's DNA, they'd have to sift through the DNA of over six billion people. Science hasn't yet developed to a point where authorities can isolate certain parts of DNA and find the person who has identical parts.
And, although I think that the idea is idiotic, in the case that one was created, and hacked, what would be the consequences? Would someone just print off a picture of it and then stick it at a crime scene to try to frame someone? We are currently incapable of cloning humans, so the DNA would be next to useless, except in the case of planting a single strand of it at a crime scene, and that is only in the case that all DNA was not stored in a computer database and instead in a building.
Your right the database will take a lot of time to set up, but to get everyones DNA isn't impossible suggestions:
FOR NEWLY BORN BABIES:
When you go to get your childs birth certificate they should get there DNA aswell so it can be added to the dATabase.
FOR ALREADY ALIVE PEOPLE:
Well you know for an election people have to go to specific spots to vote well if we do that with the DNA database then maybe we would be able to get evreyones DNA. Every Continent should have there own database.
PEOPLE ENTERING ANOTHER CONTINENT:
At the airport there should be stalls or shops set up so u can give your DNA to that continent and if they re-enter then they don't have to give the DNA again.

Your plan would require millions of tax payer's dollars, and then what would we have? About six and a half billion individual strands of DNA in a database. And every time that we wanted to find out who had committed a crime by testing their DNA, we'd have to run a scan with the found DNA against the DNA in the database, one strand at a time. It's not like Google where you just put in a strand of DNA and it comes up with the most likely DNA in the database. You'd have to spend about five minutes letting a computer run an analysis of how close the DNA strands are. And if they didn't match, you'd have to try another strand. Then another strand. Then another strand. It would simply take too long, and by the time that you found out who the DNA at the crime scene belongs to, thousands of other crimes would have been committed. Technology just isn't advanced enough at this moment in time to allow such a thing to work. Maybe it would work in the future, but then, most of the other topics mentioned on this Blog will be completely different in the future, so discussion of what is practical now is far more appropriate.
Setting up the DNA would take ahwihle but it wouldn't be impposibleand you would need someone very smart to figure out how to build it and how fast it can trace the DNA. But you say how much money it would costor Australia to build this database..but don't we spend money on less important things like the war heaps of money is being spent on that instead of develping new thnigs like the databas or discovering new cures for cancer and lukiemia etc.If someone actually put into consideration how to build and organise and plan this i think we colud just make this idea become real.
To S. Gultekin: There are people trying to figure it out. We are designing faster and stronger computers each year. I doubt that investing more money into it would dramatically increase the rate at which computer speeds increase. People attempt to map the human genome as a job. They get paid. The same thing goes for people studying cancer and leukemia. What use would investing more money into it do? The people who perform the jobs would just get paid more. However, there are still other jobs that are at the same difficulty level, yet earn more money, so I doubt that people would flock to get jobs in the fields if the amount of money earned was increased. How is it that replacing a faulty dictatorship and keeping the peace in a foreign country that contains people who have the intentions of destroying all Western beliefs is a waste of money? As much as I dislike modern society, I prefer it over having the forced religious and racial values that would be imposed upon us if the Western world was to be conquered. If you could be shot for going out in the streets, wouldn't you take it as a blessing that some foreign country cared enough to give you freedom?
