Do school authorities have the right to search students’ lockers?

With the esculating violence occuring in schools (particularly in America), many schools are conducting routine searches in students' lockers, in order to reduce weapons and drugs coming into the schools.

Some students may feel that a locker search is going too far. Perhaps some may say that they'd rather the teachers pat them down than search their locker. Some may say that they wouldn't like people going in their locker, as that's personal.

Many argue that school authorities should search backpacks for weapons and allow police to search lockers for drugs, but not on a daily basis. It would be awkward for the students to be searched daily just because there are a few oddballs at the school who bring weapons and drugs in. These particular issues should not be taken lightly because it brings harm to the student body and safety issues would arise from weapons and drugs brought onto the school premises.

Do you think it is ok for schools to search students' lockers?

well to be honest, this has two different sides. yes they should be checked, because i mean if there are people who can potentially harm them, its the right thing to do not only to punish them, but to also make school a safer place for their peers, but also searching the students on a daily basis or a weekly basis is clearly invading their personal space and their privacy. its the wrogn thing to do, but should be done in such matter that should make the students feel comfortable :)

I think that to go into a students locker, that it is invading their privacy. If that person has the wrong thing in their locker, it is their own fault for putting it in their locker. If the teacher is suspicious of that student, then they should take it to the point were they search their lockers.

I believe as the lockers are school property, they have every right to search students lockers if it may harm other students. Although, i do not agree with searching students bags.

YES schools have every right to search lockers and it should be compulsary to do so every week as many students will be more organised and have to keep their lockers clean!

The ONLY reason for school staff to check students lockers is because the person/people is/are suspected of having a weapon or something harmfull or being suspected of being in possesion of illigal drugs!!!!

With the growing rate of substance use in adolescence conducting routine searches are a good idea. Substances that are illegal have no place to be in your locker as you should be storing educational items like textbooks and pens. As D.Finch and Rux Dtwone stated that lockers are school property and schools have everyright to check lockers if the believe that there may be something to harm other students. Bags are a students personal property and should not be searched by any member of the school without the permission of the student.

'Perhaps some may say that they'd rather the teachers pat them down than search their locker.'

In this case I'd rather a teacher go through my locker than pat me down as this is going to far in the means of improving school safety.

i think school authorities should be aloud cause it's there property for starters and if they had something to hide that was against the rules then it might be for our saftey to keep away from school. But they shouldn't be aloud to search our bags cause thats a whole differnt concept

They shouldn't be allowed to go through our lockers.

YES because if the student has something there not alowed for example smokes, schools should check lockers becuase no student should be smoking or doing ellegal activitys.

well it is a yes and no question. Firstly it is an invasion of privacy for the students, but then what if they have things in there that they shouldn't E.G. drugs, smokes, alcohol or even knives?!?! By T.Kite & S.Harris

Well, obviously some people are going to feel like it's invading their personal privacy. But if it prevents you from getting harmed, than that could be a good thing. So, yes, I think they should be allowed, but need to have some limits of what they can't search. M. Bennett
