Stalin - good or bad?

Seeing as we have studied Joseph Stalin, do you believe that he was a good or bad leader and why?

I discovered a short 4 min documentary put together by a student, which is a brief biography of Stalin.

Stalin was a good and bad leader. where Stalin lacked leadership and the bad things he did he made up for it by dong good things.

Stalin tried to convince his people by being a good leader, but at the same time tried to set a statement that he was a tough ruler to other leaders. This was to convince them that he wasn't easily defeated, preventing invasion.

Stalin tired to prove he was better than other leaders in a way that was confusing but a brilliant idea.

He defeated Adolf Hitler to state that he was fierce and strong not just mentally but physically.

Stalin not just being a bad leader and killing thousands of lives, Stalin was committed to being a leader.

Stalin was the cause of many deaths in Russia, and even though he led Russia to victory over Hitler, his crash programs of industrialisation and collectivisation in the 1930's caused many deaths. How can you possibly say he was good????

s.gultekin is so right! It's hard to know how we should honor Stalin today.

He was responsible for much of the industrial modernization in Russia, helping them catch up to the rest of the world.

On the other hand, Stalin was said to have killed about 20 million people in Russia. With all of his insecurities about the people around him and his many purges, he killed innocent people for ridiculous reasons.

He was smart enough to make a "treat" somewhat, with Germany, and when Hitler betrayed that, Stalin overcame him and was able to acquire for land for Russia, but in the process, killed a good portion of the Russian people.

So when someone figures out just how this man should be remembered, whether with respect and as a dignified, courageous leader, or and evil man who killed thoughtlessly and didn't help strengthn the weak Russia, please let me know!

Collectivisation did not work because when Stalin came in and said were going to make better farms were going to put small ones together, the Kulacs burned the crops and farmland they basicly said if we cant have them then no one can have them. They Pretty much caused the famine. And thats why they were Prosicuted by Stalin

Stalin saved, not only the USSR, but the entire world from fascism. The Nazis would have won easily against the British and Americans, as had been seen in North Africa. D-Day was only possible because Germany had been weakened so badly on the Eastern front.

Stalin was also the first Russian leader to preside over a totally literate nation. He managed to teach the largest nation in the world to read, even before America, and many other European nations.

In conclusion Stalin turned the USSR from a civil war ridden nation, to the most power on Earth. I will never forget what he has done for my family, and the world.

it really depends. his impact in the short-term was obviously bad. he sacrificed millions of innocent lives to fulfill his aims, and his purges was to satisfy his many insecurities. as a person, he had to be the most cruel and evil kind. yet, if you look at his achievements, of how much he had contributed to Russia, of how he managed to single-handedly transform Russia from a backward country into a world's super power in less than 10 years, it is impossible to deny that Stalin was a great leader. yes, he was cruel and responsible for many deaths, but if we look back and evaluate, he really did improves the lives of many other Russians, even the Russians today. i'm not saying that his achievements overrule the people's deaths, or that he somehow made up for killing the people with his contributions, because nothing can ever redeem his heinous crimes and evil doings. what i'm saying is that as a leader, you must admit, he was a great one. and even today, many Russians adore him. this shows the impact of his rule.
