For more than four weeks now we've watched the bloodshed in the Middle East with horror. For a month, global and regional leaders have stood by and failed to take the necessary action to stop the violence. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed or wounded in the bombings in Lebanon, Palestine and Israel and the death toll is rising every day. If the US, Syria or Iran get involved, there is a chance of a catastrophic larger war.
Finally, last weekend, the US and France reached agreement on a plan. But it's now clear that this flawed compromise plan, which did not call for both sides to stop all attacks, has failed to curb the violence.
This is unacceptable! Over a thousand innocent civilians have already been killed, thousands more wounded, and almost a million people have been made homeless.
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called for an immediate ceasefire and the deployment of international troops to the Israel-Lebanon border, and been strongly supported by almost every world leader. This is the best proposal yet to stop the violence, but the US, the UK, and Israel have refused to accept it.
Now is the time to act! People around the world must tell their leaders to speak out and support Kofi Annan's proposal. If we can persuade our governments to unite in demanding a ceasefire, all sides in this conflict will be pressured to stand down.
I have just signed a petition calling on US President Bush, UK Prime Minister Blair, and Israeli Prime Minister Olmert to support Kofi Annan's proposal. If millions of people join this call, and we advertise our views in newspapers in the US, UK, and Israel, we can help pressure these leaders to stop the fighting. Most countries of the world, from Lebanon to Tanzania to India, have called for a ceasefire, and have been joined by major international NGOs such as Oxfam and Amnesty International. Christian leaders such as Pope Benedict XVI, and the World Council of Churches have also called for a ceasefire. Arab and Muslim organizations such as the Organization of the Islamic Conference and the Arab League have also been joined by Israeli and Jewish groups such as Meretz Israel, Degel HaTorah, and Brit Tzedek v'Shalom in calling for a ceasefire.

yes i have been watching the terror and destruction in lebonon for the past weeks. but what can we do about it? we cant do anything can we. Lifes not easy sometimes u would give your heart to someone or your money to who ever but you cant. Becuse then ur left with nothing. Ok in africa we support people by world vision. But how can we help them.
And if we decide to how do we acctualy know that that money will go to helping them. How do we acctually know that the world vison money acctually goes to that child or the christmas wish boxes acctually go to the poor and sad children of africa. These kind of things worry people so they don't bother sending them and also coz they are lazy and can't be bothered to spend a cent.iwk
if australia doesn't learn a valuable lesson from this war than there is something seriously wrong with us. we take our freedom for granted! we just assume that we can walk down the street on our own and nothing will happen to us. in coutries that are in the middle of terrorist outbreaks or wars you can not do that! imagine walking down your own street and having guns and rifles pointed at you! all wars should stop and i think as a whole people on earth we should all try to watch what we do and help in anyway we can to try and track down the main terrorists. i know we live in australia and we have the freedom of speech and stuff but does it not occur to us we might not have that soon? or our kids or their kids? life isnt always going to be easy but we can try to make it easier. not just for us but for generations to come. not only stopping war and terroist groups but contributing to help save the enviroment and stuff like that. every little bit helps.
I dont think war will ever stop its in human nature to fight were a preditorial species we cant help our selfs. look at America they prey on the week the middle east is being torn apart and for what? Bush thought there were wepons of mass destruction in Iraq ( at least thats what he says)if Bush kept his abnormally large nose out of other peoples busnise then Australia, America, Indonisea, England. And other countrys whould be safer from terrorism I think the resorces that have been devoted to this Stupid war should have gone in to Tightening sucurity.
I agree with Sherbet and A Ferguson. If we focused on preventing the war then later we wouldn't be focusing on wining the war. If everyone just sorted out there problems in a different way then this war that is going on wouldn't be happening in the first place. WE might not have the freedom of speech in years to come and the world would be so far from happy. Just like A Ferguson stated "every little bit helps"
